OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of radiotherapy and its association with second primary malignancies (SPMs) risk in major salivary gland carcinomas (MSGCs) patients. METHODS: Cohort 1 included 7274 surgically treated MSGC patients from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, assessing the effectiveness of radiotherapy. Cohort 2 (n = 4213) comprised patients with ≥5-year survival in Cohort 1 to study SPMs. RESULTS: Radiotherapy decreased overall survival in MSGCs patients, but improved it in high-grade MSGCs. Cumulative SPMs incidences at 25 years were 16.5% in the radiotherapy (RT) group compared to 14.5% in the non-radiotherapy (NRT) group. For second head and neck carcinomas (SHNCs), incidences were 3.4% in RT versus 1.6% in NRT. Radiotherapy increased the relative risks of tumors, particularly SHNCs (RR = 1.78). The 10-year OS rates of SHNCs after radiotherapy were significantly lower. CONCLUSION: Radiotherapy improves survival in advanced-stage MSGCs but increases the risk of developing SPMs, particularly SHNCs.

OBJECTIVES: The study aims to provide insights into the characteristics of Polish patients with different salivary gland pathologies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study conducted at a single center, including patients who underwent surgery for salivary gland pathologies between 2012 and 2022. RESULTS: This study included 239 patients who underwent surgery for salivary gland tumors or inflammatory diseases. Malignant tumors were diagnosed in 9.8% of participants, while 64% had benign tumors and 21% suffered from inflammation. The occurrence of complications after surgery was relatively low, with 9.9% of participants experiencing slight facial weakness or mild dysfunction, and 3% experiencing complete paralysis of the facial nerves. Significant differences were observed between patients with cancers and those with benign tumors and inflammation in terms of age. Cancers were more common in females (67% vs. 33%) and predominantly localized in the parotid glands (95%). CONCLUSION: Benign tumors, such as Warthin's tumors and polymorphous adenoma, were predominantly found in the parotid glands of patients aged 39-72 years. On the other hand, inflammatory diseases were primarily localized within the submandibular glands of males aged 40-68 years. Additionally, the presence of a malignant tumor was associated with longer hospitalization periods related to surgery and a higher risk of severe complications. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study on Polish patients with salivary gland tumors provides valuable clinical insights that can aid in diagnosis, treatment planning, patient counseling, and further research in the field of oncology. It contributes to the overall understanding of salivary gland tumors, potentially benefiting both patients and healthcare providers.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of salivary gland tumors in a population of a tertiary hospital in the State of Mexico, and to describe demographic variables. METHOD: An observational, cross-sectional and retrospective study of salivary gland tumors reported in a tertiary hospital in the State of Mexico in the period 2008-2019 is presented. RESULTS: A prevalence of 0.049% was found. There was no difference between sex in the studied population. Benign salivary gland tumors were the most frequent (86.7%). The age range most affected was 51-60 years. The most frequently found tumor was the pleomorphic adenoma, followed by Warthin's tumor. There was 13.33% of sialolipomas, and one myoepithelioma. There were no cases of sublingual gland tumors or minor salivary glands. CONCLUSION: Tumors of the major salivary glands are infrequent tumors; population cases from a central Mexican state and their demographic characteristics are presented to contribute to the information found in local and international literature.


OBJETIVO: Determinar la incidencia de los tumores de glándulas salivales en una población de un hospital de tercer nivel en el Estado de México y describir variables demográficas. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Se presenta un estudio observacional, transversal y retrospectivo de los tumores de glándulas salivales reportados en un hospital de tercer nivel en el Estado de México en el periodo 2008-2019. RESULTADOS: Se encontró una prevalencia del 0.049%. No hubo diferencia entre sexos en la población afectada. Los tumores de glándulas salivales benignos fueron los más frecuentes (86.7%). El rango de edad mayormente afectado fue el de 51-60 años. El tumor más frecuentemente encontrado fue el adenoma pleomorfo, seguido por tumor de Warthin. Se presentó un 13.33% de sialolipomas y un mioepitelioma. No se presentó ningún caso de tumores de glándulas sublinguales ni glándulas salivales menores. CONCLUSIÓN: Los tumores de glándulas salivales mayores son tumores infrecuentes, se exponen casos de población de un Estado del centro de México y sus características demográficas para contribuir a la información encontrada en literatura local e internacional.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinicopathological, therapeutic, and survival data on pediatric major salivary gland cancers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: National Cancer Database (NCDB) query from 2004 to 2018. RESULTS: In total, 967 cases of individuals under the age of 21 were identified. Most cancers affected the parotid gland (86%). Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (41.3%) and acinic cell adenocarcinoma (33.6%) were the most common. Tumors occurred more often from age 11 to 21, and females were more affected. Histology varied by age, gender, and race. In the 0-5 age group, mucoepidermoid carcinoma and myoepithelial carcinoma/sarcoma/rhabdomyosarcoma were the most common pathologies. In patients over 5 years old, mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the most frequent tumor in boys, while acinic cell adenocarcinoma was more common in girls. African American patients had a higher incidence of mucoepidermoid carcinoma, while White patients in the 0-5 age group had a higher incidence of myoepithelial carcinoma/sarcoma/rhabdomyosarcoma tumors. Low-grade tumors were commonly diagnosed at stage I, but the 0-5 age group had a high frequency of stage IV tumors. The overall 5-year survival rate was 94.9%, with 90% for the 0-5 years age group and 96% for the 11-15 years age group. Negative margins were associated with higher 5-year survival rates in high-stage tumors (93%) compared to positive margins (80%). Submandibular malignancies had worse 5-year survival rates across all age groups. CONCLUSIONS: Major salivary gland malignancies in pediatric patients exhibit variations in histopathologic characteristics by age, gender, and race. Negative margins impact 5-year survival rates, especially in high-stage tumors.

OBJECTIVE: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) of the lip is not a common phenomenon, and existing literature provides limited information on the clinicopathological features of labial PA. STUDY DESIGN: Patients diagnosed with labial PA at our single institution over the past 20 years (2001-2020) was retrospectively screened and analyzed to investigate the epidemiologic and clinicopathological features of these tumors. RESULTS: A total of 173 cases were screened out, and the average age was 44.3 (range 7-82) years, with a peak incidence rate during the third decade. A slight predilection for men (52%) was observed, and PA occurs more frequently in the upper lip than in the lower lip, with a ratio of 14.7:1. On clinical examination, labial PAs usually present as painless masses that develop slowly with no systemic symptoms. Histologically, labial PAs contain myoepithelial and polygonal epithelial cells in myxoid, hyaline, fibrous, chondroid, and even osseous tissues, similar to those in other sites. Specifically, 15 of 173 patients with labial PA presented with cutaneous PA. CONCLUSION: Labial PA presents over a wide age range and dominantly occurs at the upper lip. Surgical resection is the major treatment strategy, and postoperative recurrence or malignant transformation of labial PA was extremely rare.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the presentation and treatment of children presenting with primary salivary gland neoplasms. METHODS: A retrospective review of primary salivary tumor patients presenting to Children's Hospital Colorado between January 2000 and August 2020. RESULTS: Fifty children were identified with primary salivary gland tumors, comprising of 39 (78 %) benign and 11 (22 %) malignant lesions. Pleomorphic adenoma was the most common benign tumor (36/39, 92 %), while acinic cell carcinoma was the most common malignancy (7/11, 64 %). The parotid gland was the most common site, followed by the submandibular gland (66 % vs. 34 %). No tumors were found in the sublingual glands. Benign neoplasms accounted for 70 % of parotid lesions and 94 % of submandibular tumors. No significant differences in age (13.6 years, SD 4 vs. 13.0 years, SD 4.3) were noted between patients with benign and malignant disease, but tumors in females were more frequently malignant (M:F 1:1.3 vs. 1:2.7 for benign and malignant tumors, respectively). Neck dissection and/or facial nerve sacrifice were required in 27 % (3/11) and 9.1 % (1/11) of malignancies, respectively. Local recurrence was observed in 7.7 % (3/39) of benign cases and 9.1 % (1/11) of malignant cases. No salivary malignancies required chemotherapy, though one patient with neurofibromatosis received imatinib prior to resection. Two patients with locoregional malignancy received adjunctive radiation. The average duration of follow up for benign and malignant disease were 12.6 ± 25 and 45.1 ± 32 months, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study presents one of the larger single institutional experiences of pediatric primary salivary neoplasms in the past 20 years, identifying pleomorphic adenoma and acinic cell carcinoma as the most common benign and malignant etiologies, respectively. While this review found most neoplasms presented as a localized mass effectively managed with conservative surgical resection, aggressive tumors required multidisciplinary care.

BACKGROUND: Intraoral minor salivary gland tumors are relatively rare lesions with histological subtypes not commonly found in major salivary glands. This study aimed to retrospectively evaluate the clinicopathologic features of intraoral minor salivary gland tumors from the Tokyo Dental College Hospital, Japan, and compare them with findings from other epidemiological studies. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective clinicopathologic evaluation of 432 cases of intraoral minor salivary gland tumors [161 male (37.3%) and 271 female (62.7%) patients; mean age: 52.5 and 48.6 years for males and females, respectively; age at diagnosis: 7-87 (mean: 50.1) years] from the Tokyo Dental College Hospital between 1975 and 2022, including 283 benign tumors (65.5%) and 149 malignant tumors (34.5%). RESULTS: The most common benign tumor was pleomorphic adenoma (n = 239), whereas mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the most common malignant tumor (n = 74). The mean age of patients with benign and malignant tumors was 48.4 and 53.2 years, respectively, with patients with malignant tumors being significantly older (P = 0.0042). The mean age of patients with malignant tumors was significantly higher in males (56.7 years) than in females (50.9 years) (P = 0.0376), although the mean age of patients with benign tumors did not differ by sex. Tumors were commonly located in the palate [250 cases (57.9%)]. Benign tumors were more frequent in the palate, upper lip, and buccal mucosa, whereas malignant tumors were more frequent in the palate, floor of the mouth, buccal mucosa, and retromolar area. CONCLUSIONS: Understanding the features of intraoral minor salivary gland tumors is useful for diagnosis. Our study provides important epidemiological data (patient differences in age at occurrence, sex, and site of origin) that will inform clinicians and researchers.

BACKGROUND: Most of the studies on salivary gland cancers are limited for various reasons such as being single-center, small number of patients, including only major or minor SGCs, or only including epidemiological data. METHODS: A total of 37 medical oncology clinics from different regions of Turkey participated in this retrospective-multicenter study. The analyzed data included clinical and demographical features, primary treatment, metastasis localizations, and treatments and includes certain pathologic features. RESULTS: The study included data from a total of 443 SGCs. 56.7% was in major salivary glands and 43.3% was in minor salivary glands. Distant metastasis in the major SGCs was statistically significantly more common than in the minor SGCs, locoregional recurrence was statistically significantly more common in the minor SGCs than in the major SGCs (p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Epidemiological information, metastasis and recurrence patterns, treatment modalities, and survival analysis of the patients over 20 years of follow-up are presented.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to present incidence, histological subtypes, survival rates, and prognostic factors based on a national cohort of patients with salivary gland carcinoma. METHODS: All Danish patients with submandibular gland carcinoma diagnosed from 1990 to 2015 (n = 206) were included and analyzed following histological re-evaluation. Data were collected by the Danish Head and Neck Cancer Group (DAHANCA). Overall, disease-specific and recurrence-free survival were evaluated. Prognostic factors were analyzed with multivariate Cox Hazard Regression. RESULTS: The study population consisted of 109 (53%) men and 97 (47%) women, median age 62 years (range 11-102). Adenoid cystic carcinoma was the most frequent subtype (50%). Tumour classification T1/T2 (75%) and N0 (78%) was most frequent. The mean crude incidence was 0.17/100,000/year. Most patients (n = 194, 94%) were treated with primary surgery, and 130 (67%) received postoperative radiotherapy. The 5- and 10-year survival rates were for overall survival 64% and 41%, disease-specific survival 74% and 61%, and recurrence-free survival 70% and 56%, respectively. Survival rates were higher for adenoid cystic carcinoma compared to other subtypes, but the difference was not significant in multivariate analysis. Recurrence occurred in 69 patients, and 37 (53.6%) of them had recurrence in a distant site. Advanced T-classification and regional lymph-node metastases had significant negative impact on survival rates. CONCLUSION: The incidence of submandibular gland carcinoma in Denmark was 0.17/100,000/year and stable during the time period. The most frequent subtype was adenoid cystic carcinoma. Half of the recurrences presented in a distant site, and multivariate analysis confirmed that advanced stage was independent negative prognostic factor for recurrence and survival.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland tumors are assumed to be predominantly malignant in the Greenlandic Inuit population, but there is limited literature on the subject. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using national registers to describe the histological tumor types, location, incidence, and survival of benign and malignant salivary gland tumors. METHODS: We analyzed data on all Greenlandic Inuit with an epithelial-derived salivary gland tumor from 1990 to 2019. We extracted data from the Central Personal Registry and crossmatched it with the Danish Pathology Data Bank. All specimens were reviewed by a specialized pathologist. We noted patient and histological characteristics, calculated crude and age-adjusted incidence rates, overall survival, and excess mortality. RESULTS: Our study found that 76% of salivary gland tumors in the Greenlandic Inuit population were benign, with pleomorphic adenoma being the most common. Malignant tumors accounted for 24% of cases, with lymphoepithelial carcinoma being the most common type. The most common place of origin for malignant tumors was the parotid gland (71%) and the submandibular gland (15%). The median age of onset for malignant tumors was 47 years. Age-adjusted incidence rates of malignant tumors for men and women were 3.00 and 4.12 per 100,000 person-years, respectively. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that the proportion of malignant salivary gland tumors in the Greenlandic Inuit population is similar to other nonendemic populations. Our incidence rates are higher than previously reported, likely due to differences in methodology and definitions of the Inuit population. This study provides valuable insights into the epidemiology of salivary gland tumors in the Greenlandic Inuit population and may have implications for other Inuit populations as well.

OBJECTIVE: Salivary gland tumors (SGT) are a diverse group of uncommon neoplasms that are rare in pediatric patients. This study aimed to characterize the clinicopathological profile of pediatric patients affected by SGT from a large case series derived from an international group of academic centers. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective analysis of pediatric patients with SGT (0-19 years old) diagnosed between 2000 and 2021 from Brazil, South Africa, and the United Kingdom was performed. SPSS Statistics for Windows was used for a quantitative analysis of the data, with a descriptive analysis of the clinicopathological characteristics and the association between clinical variables and diagnoses. RESULTS: A total of 203 cases of epithelial SGT were included. Females were slightly more commonly (56.5%), with a mean age of 14.1 years. The palate was the most common site (43.5%), followed by the parotid gland (29%), lip (10%), and submandibular gland (7.5%). The predominant clinical presentation was a flesh-colored, smooth, and painless nodule. Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) was the most frequently diagnosed SGT (58.6%), followed by mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) (26.6%). Surgery (90.8%) was the favored treatment option. CONCLUSIONS: Benign SGT in pediatric patients are more commonly benign than malignant tumors. Clinicians should keep PA and MEC in mind when assessing nodular lesions of possible salivary gland origin in pediatric patients.

Salivary gland tumours (SGT) demonstrate geographical variation. The primary objective of this study was to determine the types, frequency, distribution, and demographics of non-neoplastic and neoplastic salivary gland pathology at Waikato Hospital, New Zealand (NZ) over a 10-year period. Following this we conducted a 10-year retrospective review of SGT epidemiology from international literature. In total 825 patients were identified, 31% (256/825) with non-neoplastic salivary gland pathology, 34% (284/825) with benign neoplastic pathology, 14% (118/825) with primary malignant lesions, 18% (146/825) with metastatic SGTs, and 3% (21/825) with lymphoma. Patients had a mean (range) age of 58 (3-102) years, were predominantly male (58%, 476/825), and NZ European (65%, 536/825). Tumours were most prevalent in the parotid gland (85%, 484/569), of which 44% (211/484) were malignant. Pleomorphic adenoma was the most common benign (71%, 203/284) and overall (36%, 203/569) tumour, while mucoepidermoid carcinoma (25%, 29/118) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) (73%, 106/146) were the most common primary malignant and metastatic SGTs, respectively. Our literature review identified 18 studies consisting of 33,933 patients, of whom 71% (24,013/33,933) had benign SGTs. Pleomorphic adenoma (68%, 16404/24013) and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (29%, 2826/9621) were the most common benign and malignant SGTs, respectively. Low numbers of non-neoplastic and metastatic SGTs were reported in the literature. This research provides a greater understanding of differences in their global distribution. Consistent with previous literature, pleomorphic adenoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma were the most common benign and malignant SGTs. In NZ, we found high rates of malignant SCC to the parotid gland, consistent with the epidemiology of non-melanoma skin cancer in the country.

OBJECTIVE: In this article on adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of salivary gland, we intend to summarize the causes of misdiagnosis and oversight of ACC hoping to improve cytological diagnostic accuracy, clinical management and patient treatment. METHODS: The study retrospectively reviewed 32 patients with ACC of salivary gland, registered at the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University from July 2014 to June 2021. These cases were diagnosed by FNA and surgical excision biopsy. All cytopathological results were retrospectively categorized according to Milan system for reporting salivary gland cytopathology (MSRSGC). The accuracy of FNA was verified by surgical excision biopsy. RESULTS: Of these 32 patients, 16 (50.0%) cases were male, and 16 (50.0%) were female. Their age ranged from 21 to 79 years, with an average age of 50.32 years. The highest incidence (15/32, 46.9%) of ACC was observed in patients between 41 and 50 years of age. 10 cases (31.3%) occurred in the parotid gland, 9 cases (28.1%) in the submandibular gland, 9 cases (28.1%) in the sublingual gland, 3 cases (9.4%) in the palate, and 1 case (3.1%) in the lip. Among the 32 cases of ACC, 23 cases (71.9%) were classified to VI, 4 cases (12.5%) to IVa, and 5 cases (15.6%) to II by MSRSGC. A comparison of the FNA results with biopsy showed that the accuracy of FNA in ACC of salivary gland is 71.9%. Being able to identify the cytomorphological features is the key factor for accurate diagnosis of ACC of the salivary gland. CONCLUSION: Our results confirm that FNA is an important initial screening in the diagnosis of ACC of salivary gland. Increased study of the cytomorphology of ACC is beneficial for more accurate diagnosis of ACC, to reduce misdiagnosis and oversight.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Minor salivary gland carcinomas (MiSGC) of the head and neck are a group of rare cancers with significant heterogeneity in histological types and with variable clinical behavior. This study aims to clarify the incidence, epidemiology, predictive factors, and outcome-based survival in a large cohort of patients treated at the Brazilian National Cancer Institute (BNCI) over a 20-year period by comparing and associating the results of current articles on the world stage. RECENT FINDINGS: The difficulty in developing an algorithm of treatment is due to the low number of cases when evaluated in a single institution and the variety of histological subtypes that have different behaviors and different treatments according to each anatomical location. We reviewed the experience of tertiary centers for the treatment of head and neck cancer and epidemiological studies from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database of the National Cancer Institute of the USA. The lack of consensus on the management of MiSGC requires further knowledge about the biological behaviors of these tumors, as the identification of predictive factor of failure and survival to adequate treatment intensity. The growing collaboration of different centers publishing their experience allows us to unify these samples to reach concrete conclusions about these tumors.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the frequency, clinical, and demographic features of minor salivary gland tumors and possible associated factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Clinical and demographic data were collected from biopsy records of two oral pathology services. Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, and descriptive statistical analysis were performed. RESULTS: A total of 480 (0.89%) minor salivary gland tumors were retrieved, 272 (56.7%) benign and 147 (30.7%) malignant. Sixty-one (12.6%) had no subtype specification. Most patients were women (307/64.0%), in sixth decade of life (80/16.7%), with a mean age of 45.32 years. Palate was the most common site (336/70.1%). Pleomorphic adenoma (PA; 245/51.1%), mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC; 70/14.6%), and adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC; 43/8.9%) were the most frequent tumors. Symptomatic case, recurrence, and tobacco use were associated with malignancy (p < 0.05). PA and MEC were more frequent in palate (p < 0.05). No association between the three most frequent histological types and gender or age group was observed (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This represents one of the largest exclusive series of minor salivary gland tumors in Brazil and worldwide. PA, MEC, and ACC were the most frequent tumors. Clinical and demographic data are similar from Brazilian studies or from other countries.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the risk of developing salivary gland tumors associated with the use of mobile phones. CONTENT: There have been a number of epidemiological studies conducted to assess for a possible association between mobile phone usage and the development of intracranial tumours, however results have been conflicting. We conducted an extensive literature search across four different databases was conducted. After selecting the articles relevant to the area of study, a total of seven studies were included in this meta-analysis, with no restrictions set on publication date or language. Studies were qualitatively assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. No significant association between the use of mobile phones and salivary gland tumors was observed (OR=1.06, 95% CI=0.86-1.32). No evidence for publication bias was detected. SUMMARY AND OUTLOOK: Our findings indicate no significant association between mobile phone usage and salivary gland tumours. However, there were many limitations encountered in these studies, suggesting that the observed result may not be an accurate estimate of the true carcinogenic risk of mobile phones, especially for heavy long-term users. In fact, the studies included in this meta-analysis highlight the need to correctly define exposure assessment in order to ascertain the risk of a certain variable.

OBJECTIVE: Carcinosarcoma of the salivary gland is a rare malignant biphasic tumor. The present study investigates the epidemiology and clinical behavior of carcinosarcoma of the major salivary glands using the National Cancer Database (NCDB). STUDY DESIGN: Historical cohort study. SETTING: NCDB. METHODS: All tumors were selected between 2004 and 2018. Patient demographics, tumor characteristics, treatments, and survival were analyzed. Cox regression analysis was performed in surgically treated patients. RESULTS: We identified 154 patients in the NCDB with carcinosarcoma of the salivary gland. Median age at diagnosis was 66 years (interquartile range, 55-76). Most patients were male (n = 92, 60%). The majority of tumors were in the parotid (n = 122, 79%), followed by submandibular gland (n = 21, 14%). The majority were high grade (n = 93, 95%), and a significant portion had locally advanced disease (pT3-4; n = 65, 62%). Nodal disease was present in more than one-third (n = 35, 36%). The most common treatment was surgery with adjuvant radiotherapy (n = 75, 49%). With a median follow-up of 36 months, the 3-year overall survival was 57.6% (95% CI, 48.7%-68.0%). In univariable analysis, advanced pT stage, pN+ disease, and positive margins were associated with worse survival. In multivariable analysis, age (hazard ratio, 1.02; 95% CI, 1.01-1.04; P = .03) and pT stage (hazard ratio, 2.51; 95% CI, 1.27-4.95; P = .008) remained significant. CONCLUSION: Carcinosarcoma is a rare salivary gland tumor that frequently presents at a locally advanced stage. Despite multimodality treatments, the outcomes are poor. In the absence of clinical trial data, these data from the NCDB could guide clinicians in the management of this rare disease.

Aim: Salivary gland adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC) is the second highest incidence of malignant salivary gland tumor. The purpose of this study was to establish nomograms combined with SACC patients based on the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Methods: Patients with SACC were included in the SEER∗Stat Database from 2004 to 2016. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) Cox regression analysis was applied to filter potential prognostic clinical variables. Multivariate analysis from the Cox proportional hazards model was performed to determine the independent prognostic factors on overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS), applied to develop nomograms. The Schönfeld residual test verified the proportional hazard assumption. The discrimination and consistency of nomograms was assessed and validated according to concordance index (C-index), receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and calibration curves using an internal 1,000 times bootstrap resampling. The nomogram's net clinical benefit was assessed through decision curve analysis (DCA). Results: A total of 658 patients with SACC were included. Age, T stage, N stage, M stage, histologic grade, and surgery were independent prognostic factors for OS and DSS. Based on these independent prognostic factors, nomograms were developed to predict 3-, 5-, and 10-year OS and DSS. In the validation of 1,000 times bootstrap resampling, the C-index and ROC curves had good discriminatory ability. The calibration curves indicated excellent consistency between the predicted and actual survival results in the nomograms. The DCA curves demonstrated that the nomograms had good clinical benefit and were superior to the TNM stage and other variables. Conclusions: Two nomograms developed in this study precisely predicted the 3-, 5-, and 10-year OS and DSS rates of patients with SACC in accordance with independent prognostic factors, and their clinical value is better than TNM staging, providing a prognostic reference for other SACC patients.

PURPOSE: The review of indications for surgical treatment of major salivary glands in adults hospitalized in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Medical University of Warsaw. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The retrospective analysis was based on the 1173 postoperative histopathological examinations of the salivary glands collected over a period of 10 years (2010-2020). Analysis included histopathological diagnosis, localization of lesions, multifocality, complete resection, lymph node involvement, as well as demographical data of sex and age. RESULTS: Over half (61.38%) of all indications for surgical treatment of the salivary glands were benign tumors (n = 720) with the most common pleomorphic adenoma, which accounted for 33.5% of all cases (n = 393). The next most frequent group of diagnoses were non-neoplastic diseases of the salivary glands, 24.98% of all cases (n = 293). Malignant neoplasms of the salivary glands accounted for 13.64% of all diagnoses (n = 160). Salivary gland diseases slightly predominated among the female sex, with a particularly pronounced predominance in pleomorphic adenoma. Men, on the other hand, were treated more often for malignant neoplasms. The mean age of the patients was the lowest in the group of non-neoplastic diseases of the salivary glands. The mean age of patients with malignant neoplasms was significantly higher than in other pathologies. The largest tumors size was identified for malignant neoplasms. Diseases of the salivary glands treated surgically were most often located in the parotid gland, with the exception of non-neoplastic diseases, which most often involved the submandibular gland. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical management in pathologies of the salivary glands applies to all types of lesions, both neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases. Patients with particular diseases are characterized by a different structure of age, sex and location of changes.
